                                          “Nigeria’s Silent Slaughter”-A Report

NIGERIA:

The digital divide between rural and urban areas is growing into a wider barrier mainly due to the insecurity. The “silent slaughter” is a report by International Committee on Nigeria (ICON). It documents the killings in Nigeria within a specific time period. The slaughter is still on-going and has been under-reported. While sponsors of the insecurity become richer, it has created a digital dark zone in many places.

Although we work in the southeast region where there is relatively less violent killings but kidnappings, it has severely crippled education effort. The region continues to experience brain drain that threatens the future of the region. The rural places continue to witness a mass exodus of young people to semi-urban and urban areas where they are recruited to perpetrate internet-based fraudulent activities. These are the very talents we need to promote digital learning.

Like in many other communities in the southeast, the primary focus is survival. Tech savvy talents who by the nature of their skills, are most mobile, continue to deal with threats of kidnapping and death. They would rather migrate to “safer” urban centers or move abroad at the slightest opportunity.

The US Congressman Rep. Riley Moore’s Recommendation here undoubtedly corroborates the ICON report which documents the figures and graphics representing on-the-ground realities.
Against all odds we will continue our work in these terrains with motivation and more support.
